The Best Action Movies of 2013

This year's most entertaining action films yet. If you are looking for a good action adventure film that has been released within this year, here are our recommendations.

Action films have always been favorites among cinema fans. There's a reason why most of the biggest names in the film industry are actors who have built their careers around movies in the action genre. Every generation has its most well-known action movie stars. The past had the likes of Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood, Jean Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Bronson and Bruce Willis among countless others. And by the way, most of these names mentioned are still active to this day.

Today, there's a new crop of actors dominating the action genre scene. These actors include Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner and Christian Bale. How action movies are made today is of course different from how they were usually made in the past. For instance, last year (2012) and this year, we saw a slew of action-superhero films rolling into theaters. These types of pictures seem to be the rage nowadays. They are generating so much success that studios keep on creating sequels after sequels for them. Iron Man and the Batman series by director Christopher Nolan alone already have three films each.

Good Action Movies That Have Already Been Released this Year:

1) Zero Dark Thirty by Kathryn Bigelow

The recipient of five nominations from the Academy Awards, Zero Dark Thirty is another war masterpiece by the very talented director Kathryn Bigelow.

Written by Mark Boal, Zero Dark Thirty tells the story of the manhunt for Osama Bin Laden who was considered to be the most dangerous man/terrorist on the planet.

The hunt for Bin Laden took more than a decade beginning with the attack perpetrated against the United States in September 2001 wherein the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon were hit by planes hijacked by terrorists.

The film was nominated at the Academy Awards in the following categories:
  1. Best Picture
  1. Best Actress in a Leading Role
  1. Best Original Screenplay
  1. Best Sound Editing
  1. Best Film Editing
However, Zero Dark Thirty won only one of these nominations - Best Sound Editing. It lost the Best Picture award to Ben Affleck's Argo.

Cast: Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, Edgar Ramirez, James Gandolfini, Chris Pratt and Callan Mulvey.

Other Notable Films by Kathryn Bigelow
  • The Hurt Locker - The winner of the Best Picture award at the 2009 Academy Awards, The Hurt Locker is a war drama that revolves around a team of U.S. Army EOD soldiers in Iraq. Stars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty.
  •  K-19: The Widowmaker - Adapted from a story by Louis Nowra, The Widowmaker chronicles the nuclear accident that befell a Soviet submarine in July of 1961. The captain of the ship was portrayed by Harrison Ford.
  • Point Break - The film that catapulted Keanu Reeves to stardom, Point Break is an action-packed picture about an FBI agent going under cover in order to catch a group of bank robbers who might be surfers.

2) The Last Stand by Kim Ji-woon
The first American production by South Korean director Kim Ji-woon, The Last Stand is about an aging sheriff and his inexperienced staff trying to stop the ruthless leader of a cartel from escaping the United States into Mexico.

This movie marks Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to film in a leading role after nearly a decade of doing cameos. The Last Stand also features Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Peter Stormare and Rodrigo Santoro.

3) Broken City by Allen Hughes

Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe appear here as an NYPD detective and a city mayor respectively. Broken City was bashed badly by film critics and nobody can blame them. This is one of those films that you'd either love or hate. Well, I liked it. The story is sort of stupid and the scenes sometimes are over the top but hey, that's what action movies are supposed to be. I don't usually care if it's dumb as long as I'll enjoy it.

Well-known critic Richard Roeper gave the picture three out of stars. And I'm with him 100%.

The great cast also include Barry Pepper, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kyle Chandler, Jeffrey Wright, Alona Tal, and Natalie Martinez.

The film's directed by Allen Hughes (The Book of Eli, From Hell, Dead Presidents, Knights of the South Bronx). 4) Iron Man Three by Shane Black

Having seen the first two pictures in the series, I'll have to say that this latest installment is the best among the three. The first one comes second best. The second installment wasn't that enjoyable; in fact I hated it. But Tony Stark is in top form in this last one. The fact that it grossed over a billion dollars worldwide is a testament to the quality of the film. It currently stands as the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time.

Directed by Shane Black who took over the directing reins from Jon Favreau who helmed the first two, Iron Man Three has Aldrich Killian and the Mandarin as antagonists. These villains are played by Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley.

Other main characters in the feature are Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall), Ellen Brandt (Stephanie Szostak), Eric Savin (James Badge Dale), and Harley (Ty Simpkins).
