Choosing a content management system (CMS) is something that a lot of webmasters often take for granted. They only realize that they've made a mistake when they come across problems with their websites or blogs and it's already too late to come up with quick and reliable solutions. Planning, creating and launching a website is a process.

When an error is made during these stages, the repercussions in the future can be very difficult to fix. Needless to say, among the usual errors made is in the CMS selection process. Below is an overview of the most common mistakes that webmasters make when choosing content management systems.

1) Not doing their research. There are variations of content management systems so it's absolutely necessary for a webmaster to research about them before making a decision on which one to choose. We are talking about software solutions here so research is very important. With that said, as a webmaster, the first things you need to do is write down your requirements, list down the features of the software that you need, and come up with what you would expect from the software company you're going to work with.
2) Not determining if the software is scalable. Choosing a CMS that gets stuck at a very specific level is never a good idea. There will always come a time when your website or blog reaches a point wherein you need to expand in order to accommodate more data, traffic, or requests. This will be very difficult to do if the CMS you have chosen from the beginning is not scalable. If you are going to avail of a software that is too small, you are going to outgrow it and trying to expand will be a huge headache. So think big and make sure that you get a CMS that's flexible and scalable.
3) Not testing the reliability of the content management system. Buying software is rather easy to do but putting the software to work is another thing. There's always the chance that the software can't perform the way it promised. With that said, it's highly suggested that you put the software on a test run before you decide on purchasing it. This way, you get to see if it's the suitable system for your particular needs.
4) Not understanding the problems or issues that need to be solved. This is especially true when it comes to choosing a CMS for an online business website. Webmasters have the tendency to focus on getting the CMS software without taking into full account the specific problems that need to be solved. You can't get the software then understand the problems later. It should be the other way around.
5) Not evaluating usability. A lot of webmasters assume that their targeted users will be able to understand and use the software they're about to purchase. To avoid this pitfall, a webmaster has to take into account the targeted users when selecting a content management system.

In conclusion, many webmasters often fall into the pitfalls discussed above. Now that you are aware of them, you should be able to avoid such pitfalls when you are choosing a CMS yourself.
